He held office from July 1981 to October 2003 and then from May 2018 to March 2020 with a cumulative 24-year term, making him the longest serving prime minister in the country. Prior to his promotion to the post of prime minister, he served as Deputy Prime Minister and in other Cabinet positions. He has served as a Member of Parliament for Langkawi since May 2018, Kubang Pots from August 1974 to March 2004, and South Setar City from April 1964 to May 1969. His political career has been around for over 75 years, from participating in protests against citizenship policies for non-Malaysians in the Malayan Union in the 1940s, to form the Malaysian Aboriginal Party in 2016, the Homeland Eradication Festival in 2020 and the Homeland Movement in 2022.

Raised in Alor Setar, Kedah

Born and raised in Alor Setar, Kedah, Mahathir excelled at school and became a doctor. He became active in the United Nations National Organization ( UMNO ) before entering the Malaysian Parliament in 1964. He served a term before losing his seat, then fell with Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman and was expelled from UMNO. He wrote the Malay Dilemma during this period, which is the basis of the policy of affirmation of the Malay ethnic group in the country. When Tun Abdul Rahman resigned, Mahathir re-entered UMNO and parliament, and was promoted to the Cabinet, where he served as Minister of Education from 1974 to 1978 and Minister of Trade and Industry from 1978 to 1981. He became Deputy Prime Minister in 1976. In 1981, he was appointed prime minister following the resignation of Tun Hussein Onn.

Father of Modernization

During Mahathir's rule as prime minister, Malaysia experienced a period of rapid modernization and economic growth, and its government began extensive industrial privatization and a series of bold infrastructure projects. Mahathir is a dominant political figure, winning five consecutive general elections and repelling several rivals to the UMNO leadership. However, the accumulation of power at the expense of judicial independence and the power and privilege of Malaysian royalty. He continued his policy of affirmative action, but in the 1990s introduced the policy of the Malaysian Nation which saw some political liberalization. He used the controversial Internal Security Law to detain activists, non-mainstream religious figures, and political opponents in 1987 Operation Lalang and then Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, he fired in 1998. Mahathir's record of restricting civil liberties in Malaysia as well as antagonism to Western interests and economic policy made his relations with Western countries difficult. As prime minister, he is a supporter of third world development and a well-known international activist.

Retirement

After resigning in 2003, Mahathir became a staunch critic of his own successor Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, and later Najib Razak. In 2016, Mahathir retired from UMNO due to the 1MDB corruption scandal. Later that year, the Malaysian Aboriginal Party ( ONE ) was officially registered as a political party, with Mahathir as its chairman. He is a coalition candidate for Pakatan Hope for the prime minister in the 2018 election, which they won. Prior to the election, Mahathir promised to ask for forgiveness for Anwar Ibrahim and hand over the prime minister to him after an indefinite period. Mahathir became the first Malaysian prime minister to represent the ( BNP ) ( or his predecessor, the Alliance Party ), and the first prime minister to serve a non-consecutive term, or as a member of two different parties. During his second term, Mahathir prioritized the reopening of the 1MDB scandal, combating corruption and "restoring the rule of law", and reduce spending on large infrastructure projects such as those under the Belt and Road Initiative.

Recent Political Party

In 2020, Mahathir's refusal to begin the process of handing over the Prime Minister's role to Anwar contributed to the political crisis, leading to the overthrow of the Pakatan Harapan government and urging Mahathir to resign. At the time of his resignation, he was the world's oldest leader at 94. Mahathir left ALL in protest of his new alliance with UMNO, and formed a new Pejuang Tanah Air Party that same year.
